Privacy and Data Protection
Welcome to Franklin Academy’s Privacy Center.
At Franklin Academy, we are committed to protecting student privacy and ensuring the security of student data. This page provides information about our privacy practices, your rights under federal and state laws, and how we safeguard student information.
Your Rights Under FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) grants parents and eligible students (students over 18 years old or attending postsecondary institutions) the following rights:
- Right to Access – You have the right to inspect and review your child’s education records within 45 days of a request.
- Right to Request Amendments – If you believe the records are inaccurate or misleading, you can request a correction.
- Right to Consent to Disclosures – Schools must have written permission to release information from student records, except in certain authorized cases (e.g., school officials with legitimate educational interests, transfer requests, or compliance with a judicial order).
- Right to File a Complaint – If you believe the school has violated FERPA, you may file a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office.
For more details, visit the Franklin Academy’s Annual FERPA Notification or the FERPA website.
Your Rights Under PPRA
The Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA) grants parents rights regarding surveys and data collection, including:
- The right to opt-out of surveys that collect sensitive information (e.g., political beliefs, mental health, religious affiliations, or family income)
- The right to review instructional materials used in teaching
- The right to be notified and consent before their child participates in any federally funded survey, analysis, or evaluation that involves sensitive topics
Parents who seek additional resources on student privacy under PPRA may visit the US Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office website. Parents who believe their PPRA rights have been violated may file a complaint online by selecting the PPRA complaint form option.
For more details, visit the PPRA website.
